Report from the Missouri District of the LLL
On behalf of the Missouri District Lutheran Laymen's League and its Board of Governors, we thank you for your ongoing support of the LLL and Lutheran Hour Ministries. Your prayers and financial support make it possible for LHM to serve the church as we do.
The 70th Missouri District Convention was held September 29-30th, 2012 at Howard Johnson's, Columbia, MO. Officers elected for the next two years are:
President: Jim Harms, Columbia
Vice-President: Harvey Loenneke, Jackson
Secretary: Alan Turley, Fenton
Treasurer: Mark Nolte, Warsaw
We wish a heartfelt thanks to the outgoing President, Brian Mitchell and his wife Karen for their countless hours and efforts for the work of the Lord in representing and leading the MO District LLL these past four years.
Lutheran Hour Ministries has been blessed to help shine the light of the Gospel around the world in a number of exciting ways:
Regional Outreach Conferences (ROC) encourage and equip God's people to be mission-minded witnesses for Jesus Christ! Consider attending a Lutheran Hour Ministries Regional Outreach Conference or ROC September 6-7, 2013 in Nashville, Tennessee or October 18-19, 2013 in Omaha, Nebraska. These lively conferences feature leading speakers on ministry, instructive break-out sessions, takeaway resources to use at home, and inspiring worship-all designed to empower attendees to share their faith in word and deed. Enjoy fellowship with other Christians? ROC's are led by well-known specialists in their ministry fields and are well worth the time and energy for people of all ages whether you're a pastor or a layperson.
Lutheran Hour Ministries MISSION U witnessing-training program are designed to provide lay people with the tools and training needed to confidently accept their mission of sharing Jesus Christ with unique people in diverse settings. Consider hosting a MISSION U. MISSION U provides a number of course options addressing topics that meet your congregations specific witnessing-training needs. By participating in MISSION U courses, congregations will gain tools that sharpen their witnessing methods and enhance their outreach to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Men's NetWork Bible Studies are currently focusing on racing and fishing with a "springtime" flavor?
Winning the Race is a lively study about the faith-walk (the "race") of the Christian life. In three sessions, Chris Schneider stresses the value of teamwork (church participation); the role each of us plays individually; staying fit spiritually; and facing setbacks with courage and resilience. He says, "With God's promise of eternal life before us, and our victory already won by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we have every reason to give it everything we've got, until the last second is ticked off the clock, or until the checkered flag has fallen." Echoing Henry Russell "Red" Sanders' famous quotation, "Winning isn't everything; it's the only thing," Schneider tells us that though "we were all born losers ... Christ turned us into winners."
Reel to Real. Hosted by Lutheran Hour Ministries' Executive Director Bruce Wurdeman along with Pastor Jim Rhiver, the soon-to-be-released Men's NetWork study Reel to Real: Of Fish and Men offers a behind-the-scenes look at the faith and philosophy of five anglers, three of whom were prizewinners in last year's Fourth Annual Men's NetWork North American Fishing Tournament. Filmed at Richland Chambers Reservoir, south of Dallas, Texas, this four-session video Bible study explores the issues of temptations, trophy catches, the ones that got away, and death and how they play out in guys' lives. Reel to Real features not only candid conversation about the power of Jesus Christ in the lives of ordinary men but also plenty of footage of these five anglers.
As with all Men's NetWork video studies, you can register to view them for free online or you can purchase the DVD version; and of course a study guide is available as well. To learn more, log onto www.lhmmen.com!
Important Changes for Individuals Directing Thrivent Choice Dollars: The Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Choice program has been a great blessing for Lutheran Hour Ministries since it was implemented in 2010, bringing in more than $500,000 for the ministry! Many faithful people have supported the ministry by setting up a recurring direction to Lutheran Hour Ministries so that Thrivent would designate Choice Dollars to the ministry every time they were available. But this process has now changed!
Thrivent members can no longer set up recurring gift designations to organizations such as Lutheran Hour Ministries. Thrivent members must now go through the gift designation process every time Choice Dollars are available. Thrivent officials made this change to ensure that the program continues to be fully funded so that members can contribute as much as possible to the causes they support.
Lutheran Hour Ministries wants Thrivent members to be able to take full advantage of the Thrivent Choice program, whether you choose to support this ministry or any other.
To find and support Lutheran Hour Ministries through Thrivent Choice online, simply go to www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice. To search for the International Lutheran Laymen's League/Lutheran Hour Ministries, type "International" into the keyword search, then type "Saint Louis" into the city blank and select Missouri in the state menu (be sure to spell out "Saint"). Or call Thrivent at 1-800-847-4836.
Lutheran Hour Ministries Launches 'The Lutheran Hour' Mobile App: A new smart phone mobile app for The Lutheran Hour is now available from Lutheran Hour Ministries. The app allows you to play the audio or read the text of the program's current sermon; search and play a sermon from The Lutheran Hour archive.
Please remember these MO District LLL Projects: Seminary Banquet, Vietnam Ministry, Bible Correspondence Courses, and the Student Assistance Fund as you consider fundraising opportunities in your congregations and zones.
Finally, please keep the LLL and Lutheran Hour Ministries in your prayers. Tell others about Lutheran Hour Ministries and why you believe sharing the love of Christ is so important in a world searching for truth.
